Visas for Holland to be with my Dutch Boyfriend

Posted in Netherlands forum

Hi, I am American and want to move to Amsterdam to be with my boyfriend who is Dutch. Is there any way I can get a visa to go there and live with him and be able to work there as well?? Do we have to register as a partnership when I go there as a tourist or can I just go there and apply for a residence permit within 5 days of getting there and be able to get a residence permit with the ability to work there? Or should I apply for an MVV before I go to The Netherlands even though I don't need to since I am American? What is the best way to get a residence permit and working permit as soon as possible??? Are you able to work in holland if I am there to be with my boyfriend, do we have to register as a partnership or can we do a cohabitation visa??

If you move , as a Dutchy, to Belgium[ or any other EC memberstate] , for at least 3 months, you are an EC CITIZEN.
[ If you stay in NL , you are not an EC Citizen, because you didn't effectuate your EC right of free movement.]
And have the right to be united with your partner, with whom you have a steady relationship for at least one year ,and have visited eachother for at least 45 days in that yr, or whom is your registered partner or spouse. You will have to sign Lawfull Cohabitation[ Wettelijke samenwoonst, ] compatible with our Dutch Registered Partnership.
    The famous Belgian Route.
Must say that Gemany is less bureaucratic, but there you must be married.
For U2 there is no problem, since he doesn't need a visa, you can move to Belgium togetherfrom day 1.
I know an appartment in Geel , that's free in July.[ or earlier, after April 1]
and one in Antwerp, free now.

If Jamie comes to NL and wants to stay longer than 3 months, he needs to apply for an MVV, that will cost 830 euro.AND after APPROVAL A VVT FOR 1 YR , 441 EURO, after 1 yr another 441[or more at that point probably.].After 5 yrs again PAYDAY.

As a EC citizen once 41 euro after coming back to NL and do the' EU -toetsing....'[check according to EC Directive]
And you have the Belgian experience....

That is the advantage of us Dutchies, we speak English...And you also could move to Belgium together first, and after 4 months move back to NL and you will have the rights of an EC Citizen, like your bf.You get instant residence permit. And be allowed to work .

Thank you so much Karla for the much needed and quite helpful info!! As I said in my previous post this is all so new to me and I am so afraid of screwing something up and getting denied! My boyfiend is a dutch citizen also. We are only planning on staying a year and a half until his business contract ends, then we will move to US. I think I pretty well have the documents needed aside from the pictures which like you said I can get there. I also applied for my passport last week. The job hunt is what really has me nervous now....I've heard quite a few people say that! I don't speak a lick of dutch!!!!

Hi, as an US citizen, you don't need a VISA, but,if you wanna stay longer, you need a residence permit, which costs 830€.You can apply for that IN NL.
OR as an American ,you could get a staying permit if you invest an amout of about 4500€ in your own bussiness.Or lead or develop a bussiness.

KarLix is right about the birth certificate and apostille.
my husband is not dutch, so it was actually easier for me than if he was dutch. If he was dutch i think that they may have required me to know some dutch, but i'm not sure.

but yes you need your birth certificate with apostile, and you will have to get passport sized pics with a grey background..proof of address.. hm.. i think that is it.. but we emailed IND before we came and they sent us back a really long email telling us exactly what we must do, and what we must have.. so you can also try that.
